Madonna has showered praise on Selena Gomez’s new film, Emilia Pérez, calling it a “masterpiece” with “unbelievable performances.” The 66-year-old Queen of Pop took to Instagram to share her admiration in four Stories after celebrating with the cast at the film’s screening during the New York Film Festival on Monday.
In one of the photos, Madonna posed alongside Selena and the film’s stars, including Edgar Ramirez, Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Adriana Paz, and dancer and choreographer Damien Jalet. Radiating elegance, Madonna wore a cozy black fur jacket complemented by layers of silver chains around her neck, embodying the glamour of the evening.
Her blonde tresses were parted in the middle and cascaded down in waves.
The star also shared two posters for the film on her Instagram Stories.
‘Wow,’ she wrote in pink letters on one of the posters.
Selena stars as Jessi Del Monte, a transgender Mexican cartel leader’s wife, in Audiard’s critically-acclaimed film hitting select theaters November 1 before streaming November 13 on Netflix.
‘Making this film was worth all the blood, sweat and tears,’ Gomez – who boasts 648.8M social media followers – gushed last week.
‘I am extremely proud of this project, Jacques, @karsiagascon @zoesaldana @adytapaz @edgarramirez25 (the entire family) and cannot wait for you all to see it! This movie changed my life!’
Emilia Pérez currently has a ‘certified fresh’ 87% critic approval rating (out of 63 reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes.
Gascón plays her onscreen wife Emilia Pérez. Ramírez stars as Gustavo Brun while Zoe plays Rita Moro Castro.
In Emilia Pérez, Selena Gomez takes on the role of Juan “Small Hands” Del Monte, a male cartel leader who transitions into the female persona of Emilia. Edgar Ramírez stars as Gustavo Brun in this Spanish-language film, while Zoe Saldaña has a supporting role in the edgy narrative.
The cast is set to appear at the Mill Valley Film Festival in Northern California this Saturday, where they will be honored with the Outstanding Ensemble Performance trophy.
The first trailer for Emilia Pérez, which is set to release on Netflix, was shared in August. The film draws inspiration from Jacques Audiard’s opera libretto of the same name, itself loosely adapted from Boris Razon’s 2018 novel Écoute.
According to IMDb, the film’s synopsis reads: “Lawyer Rita receives an unexpected offer. She has to help a feared cartel boss retire from his business and disappear forever by becoming the woman he’s always dreamed of being.” This premise sets the stage for a compelling exploration of identity and transformation.
In Emilia Pérez, Rita is tasked with helping the escaped cartel leader Emilia undergo 𝓈ℯ𝓍 reassignment surgery to evade authorities and affirm her gender. This compelling storyline adds depth to the film’s exploration of identity and transformation.
Back in May, the film’s stars attended its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where Gomez was visibly moved, wiping away tears after receiving an impressive nine-minute standing ovation.
In addition to her work on Emilia Pérez, Hulu subscribers can currently catch Selena Gomez as artist Mabel Mora in the fourth season of Only Murders in the Building, which streams new episodes every Tuesday.
